In Feb 2007 we took a trip to Saltville Va. The historic little town was once known as the salt capital of the confederacy. Salt was considered a luxury because before the invention of the fridge people had to preserve their meats using salt. The town actually lies in a valley that millions of years ago used to be an underground sea.
Overlooking Saltville.
This is where the give salt making demostrations.
Palmer Grist Mill. It was really cold while we were there. Check out the water wheel it is frozen.
This is a Mastodon mold made from the actual framework of one of the massive prehistoric creatures. The bones were discovered in Saltville along with other fossils. This and other neat things can be found at the Museum of the Middle Appalachians!
This is the King-Stuart house. This is the house that Mrs. J.E.B Stuart lived in after her husband J.E.B Stuart was killed at the battle of Yellow Tavern. She and her Sister In Law taught school here.
I got a call once from a gentleman who told me that this cabin was haunted. He said that people had reported hearing a baby cry and a rocking chair would rock by its self.
This sign is placed at the location of the Battle Of Cedar Creek. There were 2 different battles at Saltville during The Civil War. Please excuse the stranged hooded being in the picture. My Son had way too much soda and he was a little wild.
