The Jennie Wade House
Home of the only civilian killed in Gettysburg!
The above picture was taken in the house of the only Civilian that was killed in Gettysburg during the Civil War. Her name was Mary Virginia Wade. She was in the kitchen when she was hit when stray bullets came through the door while she was baking bread for the union soldiers.
Jennie was laid in the cellar after her death kind of like it is demonstrated above. When her body was placed in the cellar her Mom went to the kitchen to finish baking the bread for the soldiers. On July 4th at 5pm Jennie was lowered into the ground in a temp grave in their garden by some soldiers! Its also important to note that Jenny's love was in battle at the time and he was killed in action never knowing of Jenny's death.
My Mom snapped these pictures. notice the one on the top has nothing in it ...but look at the 2nd one near the coffin leaned up on the wall. You see what looks like a chalk outline of a body. Is it Jennie Wade coming back to make an appearance? Or a reflection of the light? We will never know!
Interesting fact : Jennie was not the only female that died at Gettysburg during the war. There was a female's body discovered in the aftermath. She was dressed in soldiers clothing (forget what side she was on). It was believed that she was there to be close by her man .
We have no idea what the red thing is in the picture . After blowing the pic up it's not marking tape or anything.
